On the nearest Sunday to the 50th anniversary to the founding of the Club Ray Millward is leading a run to lunch at the Square & Compass at Darley Bridge. Starting from the Square Mickleover at 10.00, coffee stop at Carsington Reservoir after 23km approx 1hr, then another 23km to the lunch stop. A couple of decent climbs in the morning but the return will be direct down the Derwent Valley, 39 flatish km making a total of 85km.

For those happier on their feet than wheels Sue Millward is organising an informal walk . The start is at Matlock Station Car Park at 10.00, Some steepish climbs early on up the Limestone Way and down through Jughole Wood. This can be slippy when wet and like any walk across broken country you undertake it at your own risk; the Club is not responsible if you fall down! If you use walking poles taken them, you will need good boots (not wellies).

Walkers will meet the cyclist at the Square & Compass about 13.00 when there is a good varied menu from snacks around £3 to Sunday Lunches at £10. We need to let the pub know numbers for catering so if you are going on one of these please let Ray or Sue know. Telephone number 01332 518740.

MORE 50TH BIRTHDAY TREATS!

Next May, once the weather has warmed up, we plan a replica of one of the Club’s earliest hostel trips to Stowon the Wold on 5th to 7th May. We will keep as close as possible to the original run but there are some changes because the original participants are 50 years older and some of the roads used in 1962 aren’t exactly cyclist-friendly these days. Out Saturday and back Sunday seemed a little harsh, so it will be back on Monday with Sunday devoted to a mild tour of the Cotswold villages where Pete Goodburn will ride the ford at Bourton on the Water and ruin his bottom bracket again.

Start will be from Willington at 0900 and 3 or 4 stops should see us complete the 76 miles toStowin the Wold for 1630. If you want to take part but feel that the entire ride is just too much, partial train (leaving between 5 and 20 miles to ride) or car use is possible. Accommodation will be at the hostel for authenticity or at one ofStow’s many hotels for greater comfort. A Saturday evening celebration dinner will be held.

The trip is of course open to all members, but it would be really nice to get as many as possible of the original trip. John Stewart is organising it (unless the original runs leader, Athol Whitbread steps forward). The trip is to show that whilst growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional – so join those of us who are opting out. Let John know if you are interested; he will co-ordinate the hostel bookings but hotels must be individually booked.

Right then folks, it`s time for Mr Storer to brush the cobwebs off his soapbox. It strikes me that the South Pennine have done nothing on the race scene this season. Well I think we all know that is not true. What is true is the lack of results being forwarded to our current publicity secretary. The reasons I`m not too sure about, but I’m guessing we are all suffering from modesty and shyness. Lets get this right, whilst there are blokes and to be pc, women, kicking bags of air around on patches of grass, getting way too much adulation and publicity, I can not see, for the life of me, why everyone is being so modest. We all compete at different levels and at different branches of the sport, but any success deserves and should be publicised. We should also being looking further ahead than just ourselves. The next thing I ask is do we want any new blood being interested in joining the South Pennine? I would like to think yes. Without new blood where will we be in the next 50 years? Answer, not here! What has this to do with publicity I hear you ask. Well if the new blood is interested in cycling, one thing is for sure, if they do not know we exist chances are they will join another club. However if they read about the South Pennine and all that it does, well our chances are increased that they may join us. Fact remains, we are a good club, which has stood the test of time. We have good riders, we continue to achieve, so lets be proud of it and let the world know.

A date for your diaries is the 11th February 2012 when the Club will be having its 50th Anniversary Dinner which will be held at the Hilton House Hotel, Hilton at 7pm for 7.30pm. Our Guest of Honour will be Matt Bottrill who has been very successful in our open events and has broken a few records. If you would like to come to the Dinner please contact Veronica Stewart on 01283 732852 the earlier the better as demand may exceed tickets available.

Before the Dinner is the freewheel contest to be held this year on 5th February which is so ably by Iris and Ken Stevens who also host an informal gathering afterwards at their home.

A few weeks after the Dinner there will be an Anniversary walk arranged by Sue Millward and a club run by Ray Millward to meet up with the walkers at lunch time.
